UFC on Fox Medical Suspensions – Swick and Varner suspended for 3 months

The California State Athletic Commission released the ringside doctors’ decisions regarding how long the participants in this past Saturday’s UFC on Fox. The two that stick out the most are Mike Swick and Jamie Varner, who are both currently suspended for 3 months. However, they may be cleared by a physician before then. I think this will likely happen for Jamie Varner, as it sounds like he has a fracture, which usually heals in 6-8 weeks; fractures in the hand sometimes heal even quicker – thus 12 weeks seems a bit long. Varner will likely see an orthopedic surgeon who will make a more specific decision.

Here is the full list of medical suspensions:

Mauricio Rua: 45 days no contest, 30 days no contact; hard bout

Brandon Vera: 45 days no contest, 30 days no contact for TKO; 60 days no contest, 60 days no contact, or cleared by physician; cut Left suborbital

Ryan Bader: 45 days no contest, 30 days no contact for KO loss.

Jamie Varner: indefinite; needs orthopedist clearance of right hand; 180 days no contest, 180 days no contact, or cleared by physician for possible fracture

Mike Swick: 180 days no contest, 180 days no contact, or cleared by physician; right ankle and elbow, 60 days no contest, 60 days no contact, or until cleared by physician for cut on right eye lid.

Demarques Johnson: 45 days no contest, 30 days no contact for KO loss; indefinite suspension until neurological clearance is received.

Cole Miller: 45 days no contest, 30 days no contact for hard bout; 60 days no contest, 60 days no contact, or until cleared by physician for possible broken right hand, left middle finger; 60 days no contest, 60 days no contact, or until cleared by a physician for suborbital cut.

Wagner Prado: indefinite, needs opthamlogical clearance.

Oli Thompson: 180 days no contest, 180 days no contact, or cleared by physician for nasal fracture

Ulysses Gomez: 45 days no contest, 30 days no contact for KO loss; 60 days no contest, 60 days no contact, or until cleared by physician for forehead laceration.

John Moraga: 60 days no contest, 60 days no contact, or cleared by physician for cut right eyebrow.
